Smartphone Apps for Healthy Living
Eating healthy is not just a 30-day quick fix or a “just until I lose 15 pounds” thing. It’s a change in lifestyle. And I am all about making that change in lifestyle as easy as possible.
Whether it’s simple meal plans, a handy grocery list, or apps for your phone, I’m here to help you get healthy.
Here are 6 healthy living apps that will make a clean eating lifestyle a little more simple
1. Seafood Watch
Eating fish is relatively good for us, but unfortunately there are some fish you should avoid because of contamination from mercury, antibiotics, or chemicals such as PCBs. The Seafood Watch app allows you to get up-to-date seafood recommendations and easily search for seafood by common market names. You can also locate restaurants and stores near you that offer ocean-friendly seafood. Available in both the iTunes App Store and Google Play.
2. EWG’s Healthy Living
The Environmental Working Group has created an app that saves you from hours of research figuring out if a product is safe for your family. Simply scan the barcode, review the product’s rating and choose whether or not it’s right for you. This app contains information for more than 120,000 food and personal care items. Download the Healthy Living App for Apple or Android here.
3. Non-GMO Project Shopping Guide
The Non-GMO Project website is a great resource to learn more about non-GMO food and products. They also have an app which “features a list of the brands and products that have been verified through the Non-GMO Project’s Product Verification Program”. You can search by product, brand name, and keyword. There are also tips for avoiding GMOs. The Non-GMO Project Shopping Guide is free for your Apple device.
If you’re trying to lose weight, as well as eat healthy, the Fooducate app is for you. There are lots of functions of this app, so bare with me. You can track the food you eat, your exercise, sleep, mood and hunger levels. You can also scan the barcode of your food and it will grade the nutritional value. The app will also suggest healthier foods. There is also a community feature where you can ask questions or share your tips with others. The app is free for Apple and Android, but there are in-app purchase options.
With over 11 million foods, MyFitnessPal has one of the largest food databases. Learn about calorie count, nutrition information and serving size. This app is a great way to track what you’re eating and see how you’re meeting your fitness goals. You can even connect the information to your health apps, like Apple HealthKit or Fitbit. This app also allows you to scan barcodes and save your favorite recipes.
6. Whole Foods Market Recipes
Have you ever gone food shopping with no meal plan in mind? Then this app is for you. Whole Foods Market app helps you see what’s on sale and create shopping lists. Obviously this app works best if you’re shopping at Whole Foods, but you can also use it to find healthy recipes (with nutrition info!). Free for Apple and Android.
Do you have any healthy living apps that you use? Please share! I’m always looking to try more.
