How Can an Infrared Sauna Improve Your Health?
Above is the audio from my lovely conversation with Connie Zack, the co-owner and Chief Sales Officer of Sunlighten™. Listen to hear Connie’s story (it all started because her brother was suffering from heavy metal toxicity) and what makes Sunlighten Saunas such an effective detox tool.
And if you live in the Kansas City area (Overland Park), Connie and her husband run the Sunlight Day Spa.
When a new client that is suffering from a health crisis comes my way, one of the first things I recommend is a detox.
Surprisingly, no one jumps up and down with excitement when I first say the word “detox”. But it’s important to focus on reducing any toxic burden so that the body can repair and heal.
‘Toxic body burden’ refers to the overabundance of toxicity in the body that burdens the body’s systems and organs and wreaks havoc on what normally would be healthy body processes. A majority of the time, heavy metal toxicity plays a role in a health crisis.
What are Heavy Metals?
Most of us all exposed to metals like copper, iron, lead, zinc, mercury, aluminum, fluoride and cadmium. And while our body is built to detox these on its own, in today’s modern society our bodies are dealing with much higher levels than ever before. Because of this, our body becomes overburden and cannot function correctly. This is when toxicity begins. Research shows that at high levels, heavy metals are dangerous.
Now some of the metals I listed are good metals – at the right levels, like copper, iron, and zinc. These are ones that our bodies need to properly function. The others are considered heavy metals and are toxic at any level.
Where are Heavy Metals Found?
It’s important to realize that you are often exposed to these harmful metals because they are found the following:
Food – pesticides, herbicides and other chemicals sprayed on our food have been associated with health and environmental issues. Avoid them by eating organic fruits and vegetables. Even though it’s not completely free of metals, it’s about reducing toxic exposure.
Water – the water seeping into the soil is contaminated from the chemicals from crops. This affects the water supply. Yes water goes through filtration system, but the legal limits of the EPA and Safe Water Drinking Act, sometimes fall short of actually protecting us. Also, heavy metal pollution in water is very high in areas where mining, smelters, metal processing refineries, wood preservation, and paper processing facilities are located. It’s important to filter the water in our homes.
Cookware – much of the cookware sold in stores is treated with chemicals. I’ve written a post on different types of cookware and which ones are safe for your family.
Personal care products – when it comes to personal care products, I avoid products with these ingredients: formaldehyde, DEA/TEA/MEA, sodium lauryl, coal tar, parabens, oxybenzone, diethylene glycol, fragrance/perfume, lead, and mercury. Click here for more information on some of these items.
Cosmetics – I recommend staying away from cosmetics that contain BHA and BHT, synthetic fragrance, retinyl palmitate, retinyl acetate, and retinol. I use the non-toxic Beauty Counter brand, visit my friend Nicole Perrotta here and check out all of their amazing products: http://www.beautycounter.com/nicoleperrotta
Household cleaners – throw out any of your cleaners that contain these chemicals: phthalates, triclosan, 2-butoxyethanol, or ammonia. Click here to learn more and how to find clean alternatives.
Why Do We Need to Detox?
All of those chemicals we come in contact with on a daily basis, put strain on our cells and eventually damage them. This creates inflammation. And with chronic inflammation comes a weakened immune system.
And while researching my husband’s brain cancer, I found that detoxification is one of the most effective treatments in the prevention and treatment of cancer.
Heavy metal toxicity has been linked to a variety of health conditions, including:
- Immune system disorder
- Learning disabilities
- Neurological disorders
- Psychological disorders
- Heart arrhythmias

How Can an Infrared Sauna Help?
“Multiple studies have shown that saunas are effective in removing solvents, organic chemicals, PCBs, pharmaceuticals, and heavy metal toxins from the human body.” (source)
An infrared sauna heats the body from the inside out. So by spending 15 minutes in one, allows your endocrine glands to excrete about a quart of sweat; something that would normally take all day. And in that sweat are toxins. The benefit of an infrared sauna, over a regular sauna, is that there is very little humidity and the high temperature is reached quickly.
One user of an infrared sauna had this experience:
I had high levels of mercury, lead and aluminum in my body at the time of purchase. After only four months of use of the sauna, these levels went down very significantly…One of the great advantages of the sauna for me is that is spares the kidney in the detoxification process. I believe and feel that my body is way healthier and now the blood tests are here to prove it. (source)
For my clients, I recommend Sunlighten Saunas. It’s the one I have at home and both my husband and I use it (see the image below for the model we have that lays on our bedroom floor. We can watch TV while detoxing!). I like that Sunlighten Saunas emit low EMFs. EMF stands for electromagnetic fields, which come from all types of electronic devices. Sunlighten meets strict safety standards and their “heater design has a 95-99% emissivity rating and cancels out EMF to levels that are virtually undetectable.”
EMFs have been linked to conditions like, depression, infertility and cancer.
